Ancient Necropsy Music Video

Ivan Jaramillo, the mastermind behind Ancient Necropsy, has released a music video for his song "Ghosts of Death Valley". This guy is amazingly good at guitar and drums. There are a couple other similar videos at his myspace. Check it out:

New Human Rejection Songs

Greek slamgroove stars Human Rejection have put out some new songs. I loved their first album along with most slam fans, and I liked with their second album which seemed to get less of a good reception. There have been some fears raised that Human Rejection are turning their backs on brutal death metal and becoming a deathcore band. Yeah, they have a corey logo, but after listening to their new songs I don't think that is happening. Honestly, the new songs sound like a stompier CADM band. It's more technical and melodic sounding than their past stuff, but it also feels like a logical continuation from Decrepit to Insanity.

The verdict: I liked it overall, but I think their old stuff is stronger. However, I do not think they've gone deathcore, just a little more intricate and less slamming. How you feel about that probably depends on how  you feel about technical/Cali style death metal. I'm going to stick with this band because they're still producing high-quality material, and I don't think they should be punished for trying to change things up on each of their releases.

On an unrelated note: This is the 200th post on Slam-Minded! I never thought it would last this long or that anyone would read it. I can't thank my co-blogger Andy and everyone who reads this enough. Let's hope we have 200 more posts. SLAM TILL U CUM!

Desvirginizagore (Peruvian brutal death metal sickness)

This band's first music video was just posted by a member of Ultimate Metal's General Metal Discussion forum. It sounds like a combination of Colombian styles (though the band is from Peru), and could be approximated as a sound between Goretrade and Sourpuz, with flashes of Amputated Genitals here and there. With a drum sound rivaling Masturbation and a dual guitar solo that could pretty much give any melo-death band a run for their money, I am predicting this band with an incredibly silly name to get great praise from this blog in the near future.

Show Review: Malignancy at the Maryland Deathfest

May 28th-30th the Slam-Minded team attended the eighth annual Maryland Deathfest in Baltimore, Maryland. MDF is the best extreme metal festival in North America bar none, and I hope at last a few of our readers got to attend. There were tons of good bands, but the one most pertinent to this blog was Malignancy, who played Friday evening. Personally I'd prefer a couple more brutal death bands at the fest, but I understand that bands like Autopsy and Pestilence will draw a bigger crowd.

If there could only be one brutal band, Malignancy was not bad choice. They play a very dynamic style with a lot of different elements. If someone described them as slamming brutal technical deathgrind they would not be wrong. They play a very unique style that incorporates slams, but employs only at the perfect time, surrounding them with grinding tech riffs. After some initial banter from the vocalist, the band launched into their brand of fast, technical and brutal death metal. One might expect a band this fast and technical to experience a drop off in live play, but that was definitely not the case here. Everyone sounded really good and, unlike some of the other bands at the fest, all of the instruments were very clear. This was really fun stuff and it was a joy to watch a veteran band pull off some impressive feats of musicianship.

The set list ranged throughout their discography, and due to the short length of most of their songs we got to hear quite a few. I'm most familiar with Malignancy's 2007 full length Inhuman Grotesqueries so I was most excited about those tracks. "Neglected Rejection" sounded amazing live. They also played a couple new tracks off their upcoming album. Not sure when that's coming out, but the tracks sounded excellent. No real change in the formula, but that's fine when the formula is already varied and unique. I will certainly be purchasing the album when it appears.

A special mention also has to be made for Danny's stage banter, which was surprisingly funny. Most metal bands just stay super grim or play up the "woo beer!" angle when they're on stage, so it was enjoyable to see someone with some charisma.

Final thoughts, Malignancy were great, Maryland Deathfest was awesome. Do not miss either if you can help it!

New Jasad tracks, a new Inherit Disease track, and also a new Pathology song too!

Jasad, everyone's favorite underachieving Indonesian slam band has two new songs up, neither of which sound particularly underachieving! Which means they've...achieved something good! Pay attention about 1:50 into "Precious Moment to Die"...if you don't immediately headbang to that, you are dead:

Jasad @ Myspace

Really, both prior albums by the band have been underwhelming for various reasons (unmemorable songwriting, really really crap production on Annihilate the Enemy...), but this seems like it'll be really good. Fingers crossed.

Inherit Disease, widely known as being, well, (unfortunately not very good) Cali brutal tech DM have released a new song off their album Visceral Transcendence...it's actually pretty good, but I'm sure a whole album of it will get tiring. Hey, at least the vocalist has stepped up his game and doesn't just sound like a really loud frog. Unfortunate that the drums have to be so overbearing while the riffing is nicely angular and logical...judge for yourself here...

...and here is the teaser track off Pathology's debut for Victory Records...er...yeah, that makes me cringe a bit too. But, fear not, for it actually sounds pretty nice.

CODE INJECT CODE INJECT CODE INJECT! Matti Way for the win.

New Wormed Single Released

This is what we've all been waiting for since the release of Planisphaerium in 2003. Wormed have finally released new material. Right now it's just a two song single called Quasineutrality, but this bodes well for an upcoming full length. I've only listened to the myspace tracks a couple times but it sounds awesome to me. The only thing bad thing about this is that the new Wormed CD and merch are all the way across the Atlantic from me and as such difficult to purchase. I love Wormed more than practically any other band, so this is making me really excited. If you haven't listened to this yet you need to.

Septycal Gorge and Embryonic Depravity Albums Out Now

As the title suggests the full lengths of Septycal Gorge and Embryonic Depravity have been officially released. I have not checked extensively but I assume it'll be a little while until they make it to North American distros but our European readers should be able to get these albums now. Everything I've heard about these albums has been positive and both of these bands are high quality. I'm sure reviews will be up here as soon as Andy and I can get copies.

If you are in the UK you get the added privilege of seeing both these bands live in December. Embryonic Depravity and Septycal Gorge, along with Vomit the Soul and Amputated, are playing four dates in mid December. So you can get these new albums and then see the bands live.

We're Still Around / New Russian Slam

Sorry for the lack of posts the past couple of weeks people. It's the start of a new school year for both Andy and I and that has taken up a lot of our time. I just received a bunch of CDs in the mail however and I know Andy has some new things planned so keep an eye for new content in the coming weeks.

And just so this post isn't a complete waste, I'll talk about Weakness, a pretty good new slam band from Russia. They're very new and all they've released is a two song demo which came out this year. However they have already been signed to Pathologically Explicit Records and judging by the songs on their myspace this was a very good decision by PER. Weakness sound really heavy and have a lot of great slams reminiscent of both other Russian slam bands (Abominable Putridity, Katalepsy) as well as a couple good stop-start and evil sounding riffs that reminded me of the new Human Rejection album. Considering they are a demo level band I was very impressed by their songwriting and overall sound. Check out their myspace and see what you think.

The Best Live Slam Courtesy of Youtube

Unfortunately it is pretty rare for most people to see slam and brutal death metal live. Most of the bands aren't able to tour extensively and unless you live in a big city you're pretty much out of luck. The brutal death scene is very active and alive right now, and thanks to the internet we can hear and buy studio releases from all around the world. However nothing beats the energy and intensity of live music. Thanks to the magic of youtube though, we can get pretty close. I've picked out a couple videos that I think slams fans will enjoy.

Soils of Fate - Versus ft. Ruben Rosas of Devourment. Recorded at the first Maryland Deathfest in 2003.

Devourment - Choking on Bile ft. Wayne Knupp (RIP)

Human Mastication - Groteque Mastication of Putrid Innards

Katelepsy - Number of Death (13)

New Sevared Signings/New Insidious Decrepancy Album

A lot of things are going on in the world of brutal death metal this summer. Luckily for you I'm jobless this year and so likely will have plenty of time to meander around the internet and post about new bands and new releases.

I'll start with one that I'm sure many people are aware of and that everyone should be excited about. Insidious Decrepancy, the one man TXDM band created by the prolific Shawn Whitaker, will be releasing its third album Extirpating Omniscient Certitude on July 31st via the excellent label Brutal Bands. I'll admit I haven't Insidious Decrepancy's first album, but the Inerrancy of Profanation is great and I'm looking forward to this release.

http://www.myspace.com/insidiousdecrepancy

Another upcoming release to look forward to is The Void Of Un-Existence by the Portuguese band Decrepidemic. Decrepidemic have recently been signed to Sevared Records. I couldn't find an exact release date but it appears that it's coming out in the next month or so. I'd actually never heard of this band until just recently but according to metal-archives they've been around since 2002. I listened to the songs up on their myspace and they're pretty good. Decrepidemic play fairly standard tech/brutal death metal, but thankfully keep it brutal enough to be enjoyable. I'd like to see how they sound on a full album without myspace destroying the quality, but my initial reaction is positive.

Staying in the same part of the world, Sevared Records have also announced the signing of Spanish slam band Extirpating the Infected. I also listened to these guys on myspace and liked what I heard. They seem to be a new band but they've recorded an mCD called Vaginal Saw Entorturement and have members of the Spanish deathgrind band Kevlar Skin. Extirpating the Infected have a very good slow groove thing happening which sounds very moshable. No word yet on Sevared is putting out Vaginal Saw Entorturement, but on first listen
Extirpating the Infected sounds pretty good.

If you haven't bought tickets yet I suspect you're too late, but if you have here is a complete of the bands you will see and the time they will play. This gives you the ability to plan ahead what bands you want to see and what bands you will skip in order to ask Andy and I for autographs. It's going to be an awesome time.

Abominable Putridity

A little while ago there was a rumor floating around that Abominable Putridity had replaced their vocalist Vladimir with "Big Chocolate" of Malodorous and Disfiguring the Goddess fame. I was skeptical at the time but thanks to some anonymous commenters I have learned that this vocalist switch is in fact a reality. It is up on Abominable Putridity's myspace and the switch has been featured on flyers. Can't say I'm all that pleased as I was a big fan of Vladimir's vocals, but I'll keep an open mind about Big Chocolate's future contributions. Abominable Putridity are near the top of today's slam scene and I hope they continue to remain there.

If you want to see for yourself or just listen to some AP songs (always a wise decision) check out their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/ABOMINABLEPUTRIDITY

New Human Rejection Song

As already mentioned on the blog (here) Greek slammers Human Rejection are releasing a new album called Decrepit to Insanity in the very near future. To whet your appetite for the new album they have put up a new song on their myspace called "Proceed to Terminal Isolate". In my opinion it sounds really good. Both Andy and I are big fans of their first album and if this song is any indication their new one will rule. The same style of bouncy slam and catchy riffs is here, but it sounds a little more developed and refined. The vocals are still sick but a little more restrained, which should quiet some of the criticism Human Rejection faced over their last album. I was pretty much assured of getting Decrepit to Insanity anyway, but "Proceed to Terminal Isolate" really sealed the deal. Listen for yourself at their myspace: www.myspace.com/humanrejection.

AP Gets a New Vocalist and a Dripping Reunion?

There's been a few rumors floating around the slam world of late. One of them is that Abominable Putridity, probably the most popular new slam band to come out in the last few years, has replaced their vocalist Vladimir with "Big Chocolate" of Malodorous. When I heard this I was very concerned because in my opinion Vladimir has really good vocals, especially on In the End of Human Existence, Abominable Putridity's debut album. I'm not really familiar with Malodorous and to be honest I've never understood why people get so excited over them. Big Chocolate's vocals aren't that great either. I did some investigation into this and I found no mention of the change on either AP's or Malodorous' myspaces. In fact the only place I have seen mention of this is on Metal Archives and AP's shoutbox on last.fm. It also seems strange that a band in Moscow would choose a vocalist living in the USA. I don't want to definitively say this is false but it doesn't seem likely to me. If anything else develops I'll post about it here.

On a happier note one of my favorite bands, Dripping, has reformed, at least for one show. According to Dripping myspace, they are getting together to play at the New Jersey Deathfest, which is happening in October of this year. The line up looks really good and besides Dripping will include Inhuman Dissiliency, Digested Flesh, and Dysentery among others. Unfortunately I'll be in Toronto in October so I'll miss this but I urge any fans in the New Jersey area to see this. Dripping are one of the most unique and awesome bands ever to play brutal death metal so this is an opportunity you don't want to miss. I just hope this one time reunion leads to something more.

"New" Devourment Song Live Video at Tokyo Deathfest

I found this video while searching youtube and I figured the readers of S-M might enjoy it. It's Devourment playing their "new" (quotes because it has been out for a while now) song Fed to the Pigs at Tokyo Deathfest 08. Sounds pretty good and I have high hopes for the new Devourment album which is scheduled to come out this year

Human Mastication...MORE NEW SONGS + ALBUM ART!

One of the biggest things this year will probably be the new Human Mastication album...we've interviewed 'em, you've seen it, we've reviewed their other stuff before...now the time is coming for a new album!

New songs are as expected...huge slams, dry inhale vocals and tight rhythms. It may not have the production of Abominable Putridity, but it has the passion and dedication...expect a review soon (as well as a review for the new Gorevent, just ordered it last night!!

Check Out This Interview

Hey guys, just wanted to point you towards a very interesting interview with Brian Baxter of Necrotic Disgorgement. It's done by the folks over at Divine Torture. Not only does it point some new releases from ND (yay!), but Brian tells some really compelling stories about his diehard support for the scene and overcoming some severe obstacles in life. It's long, but it's full of interesting and inspiring sections. Don't take it from me though read the interview! LINK

New Septycal Gorge, Fetal Mutilation tracks!

Italian slammers Septycal Gorge have a new song out entitled "Psychotic Redemption." The song sounds really fucking professional and well-done, with the trademark SG riffing and slamming. The vocal approach is equally impressive, featuring the no-holds-barred gutturals of vocalist Mariano. I would have to say that some of the dual-guitar work is really great too! Overall, a little more technical, but nothing at all bad...excellent job.

Meanwhile, over in that hotbed of slam, the Philippines...things are brewing as Fetal Mutilation ALMOST slipped under the radar with their new song "Kill Abegail Virus", an EPIC nearly 5 minute journey of excellent rhythmic transitioning and the band's uniquely complex slamming style. With almost subtly melodic and colorful riff/drum interplay, this band threatens to kill you at every corner with rabid, brutal vocals and shifting changes, and this song is no different. Even features an S-M coined "funeral slam" breakdown towards the end culminating in...well, just go listen to it. If you like slam and you like it raw and dirty, you'll dig this new one.

Until next post...
